DEBATING

--- DEBATING (SKILL)

This skill enables a character to engage in a discussion with another
character as a means of gaining experience and/or skills. Though most combat
skills and certain high-level skills cannot be debated, this process provides
players with a method to improve their characters without spending all of
their time hunting and killing monsters. Characters can engage in a general,
non-specific debate, or the player may specify a particular skill to debate.
Each round of the debate will drain the movement points of the participants,
but the longer the debate goes, the better the chances that the character will
improve the selected skill. The winner of a debate gains some experience,
while the loser of the debate will lose some experience.

Not every character or NPC is capable of debating or willing to do so. In
addition, not every NPC will understand the language you are speaking. You
will have the greatest chance of success be debating someone who is close to
your own level of skill in DEBATING. If someone has a much higher rating in
the skill, you will find their arguments too complex to understand. If their
rating is significantly lower than yours, they will concede the debate
immediately.

You can stop a debate at any time by using the STAND command, but this will
result in your character automatically forfeiting the debate. You cannot cast
spells while debating, but you can eat and drink if you become hungry or
thirsty.

Syntax: DEBATE <character> [skill]
