A detailed listing of newbie professions

The following is a list of the professions that are available to new characters on CthulhuMUD.  There are 15 newbie professions, divided up amongst different races, locations, and areas of specialization.  During character creation, your choice of race will determine what professions are available to you, and your choice of professions will determine where your character starts.

In addition to a brief description of the profession, its race and starting location, each listing below also includes information about Area Location Rooms, Attribute Modifiers, and Basic Profession Skills.

AREA LOCATION ROOMS:

Each area in the game has three rooms that are important to locate and remember, which are the RECALL, RESPAWN, and MORGUE rooms.  Separate areas may share the same Location Rooms if they are located close to each other within the same zone.  Similarly, these rooms may change in different parts of the same area.  Normally, locating these rooms is a standard part of exploring the game, but this file will identify the Area Location rooms within each newbie area to help you learn the game.

RECALL:    This is the room to which you will be transferred by using the RECALL command.  In low-level areas, the RECALL room is usually a safe room that includes food, water, or both.  However, higher-level area are more dangerous and may not include such benefits.  In addition, there are many places in the game where the RECALL command will not work at all (to increase the danger of the area by taking away an easy escape route).  Also, the RECALL rooms are often different in a newbie area and outside of it.  For example, the RECALL room in Miskatonic University is different from the RECALL room in Arkham, even though the university lies within the city.  Once you leave a newbie area, remember that the RECALL room may not be the same in the city/village outside.

RESPAWN:   This is the room in which you will reappear if your character is killed.  It is normally located near the same room where your corpse is located, but that is not always a guarantee.  In addition, dreaming can occasionally have strange side-effects on your character.  For example, if your character dream walks from Arkham to Ulthar and is then killed in Ulthar, you will usually find yourself and your corpse in Ulthar.  However, if your death is particularly violent or savage, you may reappear in Arkham, while your corpse is still located in Ulthar.  The possibility of this occurrence is one of the dangers and risks of dream walking.

MORGUE:    This is the room in which your character's corpse will be placed if (and when) you die.  All of your possessions will be located on your corpse, so it is important to locate your corpse if you want your items back.  Corpses do not last forever and will eventually decay and disappear, so time is an important factor.  Even if your corpse decays, your items will usually remain in the room, so you can still retrieve them.  However, once your corpse is gone, your possessions are not safe, and just about anyone can take them.  In some of the more dangerous areas of the game, there is no MORGUE room at all.  In this case, your corpse remains in the same room in which you were killed, and it can be very difficult to get it back.  (We strongly recommend that you get a locker and keep a spare set of equipment in it at all times.  Almost every person to ever play this game has lost at least one corpse, along with all of their equipment, so keeping a spare set of gear in your locker will help you bounce back into action much faster.)

BASIC PROFESSION SKILLS:

Each profession provides automatic access to certain skills.  The skills listed for each profession are not the only skills you can acquire; they are simply the skills that your profession gives you automatically.  When you reach the required level in the profession, you be eligible to practice the listed skills without having to first learn it from a teacher.  For example, an Apprentice who reaches 9th level will automatically receive a rating of 0 in Physics (which will be listed on his/her "practice" list).  Rather than having to locate a teacher NPC, or debating it from another character, the Apprentice simply has to go to a "practice mob" and practice his/her Physics skill to raise it.

However, the Apprentice is not required to practice Physics.  Characters can spend their practices however they wish, after all.  However, if the Apprentice later changes professions without increasing his/her Physics skill, it will disappear from the "practice" list and the Apprentice will have to learn it manually.  You do not have to raise a skill very much, just raise it by a point or two before changing professions if you want to keep it when you start your new profession.

The level listed next to each skill is the level WITHIN the profession, not necessarily a player's actual level.  For example, consider a 50th-level Apprentice who changes professions to become a Cadet.  A Cadet can automatically practice the Disarm skill at 12th level.  Therefore, the new Cadet will not receive the Disarm skill until he reaches 62nd level, at which point he will be a 50th-level Apprentice and a 12th-level Cadet.

Advanced professions provide access to more powerful skills, but many of them have certain conditions that limit who can switch into each profession.  For more information about professions while in the game, type HELP PROF.


Newbie Professions

 

APPRENTICE

A young person working and studying under a master of a particular craft.  This profession provides a background mixing both practical and educational skills.

BRAIN HUNTER

A novice Mi-Go explorer whose main task is to find fresh and usable human brains for experimental purposes.  This profession provides training in the art of disguise and brain surgery.

CADET

A young person training to be in the armed forces or law enforcement.  This profession provides a background which emphasizes physical skills, but does not neglect education.
